Warm, natural and quietly elegant, Braemar Barley is a classic herringbone wool from the Chess collection. Its softly woven barley and oatmeal tones create a beautifully subtle pattern with the warmth of sun-bleached natural fibres and pale weathered timber.
Handmade by Berry & Grouse in 100% wool, Braemar Barley brings texture and depth to an interior without introducing a strong decorative pattern. The fine herringbone weave is understated enough to sit comfortably alongside checks, stripes and printed fabrics, while its warm neutral colour gives a room an easy, relaxed softness.
Selected for The Coast House, Braemar Barley captures the warmer side of our coastal palette — pale sand, dune grasses, ecru linen, wicker and driftwood rather than overt seaside decoration.
Available across our standard lampshade shapes and sizes for table lamps, floor lamps, wall lights and ceiling lighting, according to the shade style and fitting selected.

HANDMADE IN THE BERRY & GROUSE WORKSHOP
Each Braemar Barley lampshade is individually handmade by Berry & Grouse using professional lampshade-making materials and 100% wool from the Chess collection.
The herringbone weave is positioned with care so that the direction and rhythm of the fabric remain balanced around the finished shade. On our drum lampshades, the fabric is kept on the straight, allowing the chevron structure of the weave to run naturally around the frame. On smaller tapered candle clip shades, the fabric is positioned to complement the proportions and shape of the frame.
As a naturally woven wool fabric, subtle variations in yarn, texture and weave form part of its character. Combined with the handmade construction, this gives every finished lampshade its own subtle individuality.
Our drum lampshades are finished with a matt white lining, rolled edges and a single neat vertical seam. Other shade styles are constructed and finished according to their individual frame design.
Drum shades are cut on the straight of the windowpane check to create an orderly, structured finish.
Candle clip shades are cut on the angle, giving the smaller form a more characterful tailored pattern.
Exact line placement will vary slightly according to the fabric cut. Matching orders will be coordinated from the same batch wherever possible.
THE CHESS COLLECTION
The Berry & Grouse Chess House Fabric collection brings together a considered selection of woven wool designs, each offering a different interpretation of traditional British pattern.
Balmoral brings the character of tartan and heritage check.
Kintyre offers a cleaner, structured windowpane check.
Braemar introduces the quieter texture of classic herringbone.
Lewis brings a broader, layered check with a softer and more relaxed character.Braemar is particularly useful where texture is wanted without a pronounced pattern. Its fine herringbone adds movement and depth while remaining calm enough to layer with stronger fabrics elsewhere in the room.
Each Chess design and colourway is catalogued individually within the Berry & Grouse House Fabric Registry, allowing the collection to be explored by pattern, palette and character while keeping the wider Chess family connected.
THE COAST HOUSE
Braemar Barley has been selected for The Coast House, Berry & Grouse's lighter Estate Room inspired by refined coastal living.
The Coast House takes its palette from the landscape: pale sand, dune grasses, chalky whites, sun-bleached timber, wicker, natural wool and washed coastal colour.
Braemar Barley sits naturally within this warmer side of the room. Its soft oatmeal and barley tones evoke dried grasses, pale driftwood and sandy shores, while the herringbone weave gives the fabric enough texture to prevent the neutral palette from feeling flat.
Style it with whitewashed timber, ecru linen, natural wicker, cream wool, chalk ceramics, pale stone and softly washed blue or sea-glass accents.
This is a particularly useful Coast House neutral — warm enough to soften a room, but restrained enough to sit alongside the cooler greys and blues elsewhere in the collection.
