The Scatter Cushion Buyer’s Guide

Everything you need to choose the right cushion size, inner filling and set for your home.

From practical sizing advice to filling comparisons and styling guidance, this guide will help you create cushions that feel comfortable, look beautifully balanced and sit naturally within the room.

Core Cushion Sizes

Berry & Grouse cushion cases are available in a variety of shapes and sizes, depending on the design and collection.

Please refer to the individual product listing for the exact size offered.

Our cushion cases are sold without an inner, allowing you to choose the filling and finish that best suits your room.

Cushion cases are measured from seam to seam across the front of the cover. Where a cushion has a piped trim, the visible face of the cushion may appear slightly smaller, as the piping draws the outer edge in slightly.

All sizes are approximate, and small variations may occur as part of the handmade process.

Cushion Case Size and Typical Use

16" × 16" -  Armchairs, smaller sofas, benches and layered arrangements

18" × 18" -  Sofas, beds and fuller decorative arrangements

20" × 20" - Larger sofas, beds and more generous room schemes

Other shapes and sizes may be available within individual collections or by request.

Choosing the Correct Cushion Inner

The right inner size depends on both the size of the cushion case and the density of the filling.

Our Essential Inners have a lighter fill and are supplied two inches larger than the cushion case. Our fuller Handmade Inners are supplied one inch larger.

Simply choose the size of your cushion case when ordering. The product listing will confirm the actual inner size supplied.

Choosing Your Set

From a single accent cushion to a fuller room arrangement, choose the set that best suits your furniture and the look you would like to create.

Berry & Grouse cushion cases are available as a Single, Pair, Set of Three or House Set of Five. Cushion inners are purchased separately and can be selected in the corresponding quantity.

Cushion set guide comparing a Single, Pair, Set of Three and House Set of Five, with suggested uses for each arrangement.

A well-balanced cushion arrangement should feel layered and considered, without looking overly formal or crowded.

  • Start with the largest cushions at the back to create structure.

  • Place smaller cushions in front to add depth and variation.

  • Use a Pair for a balanced, symmetrical look.

  • Choose a Set of Three for a softer, more relaxed arrangement.

  • Use a House Set of Five across a larger sofa or bed for a fuller room scheme.

  • Mix plain, patterned and textured fabrics rather than using every cushion in the same finish.

  • Repeat one or two colours across the arrangement to keep the overall look connected.

  • Vary the scale of patterns so the cushions do not compete with one another.

  • Leave enough space for the sofa, chair or bed to remain comfortable and usable.

  • Plump and reshape the cushions regularly to maintain their fullness and form.

How to Arrange Scatter Cushions
Four country-house interiors showing scatter cushions arranged as a Single, Pair, Set of Three and House Set of Five.

The best arrangements feel collected over time, with enough repetition to create harmony and enough variation to keep the room interesting.

Matching Cushion Cases and Inners

Berry & Grouse cushion cases are sold without an inner, allowing you to choose the filling and finished feel that best suits the room.

When ordering several cushions for the same arrangement, we recommend selecting the corresponding set quantity for both the cushion cases and inners.

This helps keep the order simple and ensures each case has the correct inner size and filling.

Please check the individual product listings carefully, as cushion cases and inners may be dispatched separately.

Bespoke & Interior Enquiries

For interior projects, larger quantities or cushion cases requiring an unusual size or shape, our premium bespoke cushion inners are handmade to order in the UK by a carefully selected specialist provider.

Please send us the cushion-case measurements taken from seam to seam, together with your preferred filling, required quantity and any particular preference for softness, weight or support. We will advise on the most suitable inner size and provide a tailored quotation, including availability, lead time and delivery.

As a general guide, bespoke inners are usually made approximately 1" / 2.5cm larger than the cushion case in each direction.

For example:

12" × 20" cushion case
13" × 21" cushion inner

Please allow approximately 7–10 working days for processing. Delivery charges apply to all bespoke orders.

Bespoke cushion inners made to confirmed measurements or specifications cannot normally be returned unless faulty.

Essential Inners provide practical everyday comfort and have a lighter filling density.

Handmade Inners are produced to order by our selected specialist provider and offer a fuller, more considered finish in premium MicroCluster fibre, duck feather or sheep wool.

Which filling holds its shape best?

Sheep wool offers the firmest structure and strongest shape retention.

Essential synthetic fibre, hollow fibre, MicroCluster fibre, eco-synthetic fibre and outdoor synthetic fibre are feather-free options.

This is an estimated timeframe and may vary according to the requested size, filling, quantity and supplier schedule.

This does not affect your rights if an item is faulty, damaged or not made to the agreed specification.

Please provide the required sizes, filling preferences and quantities so we can advise and prepare a tailored quotation.
