TWO STYLES TO COMPLIMENT YOUR HOME

Choosing the right lampshade depends on the type of light fitting you have, the size of your lamp base or room, and the look you would like to create. Our current lampshade collection is designed around two practical formats: candle clip lampshades and standard drum lampshades.

Candle Clip Lampshades

Designed for candle-style light fittings, our candle clip lampshades clip directly onto compatible candle-shaped bulbs. They are ideal for wall lights, chandeliers and small decorative lamps where you want to soften the light and add a considered fabric detail.

Finished with a white candle clip frame, these smaller shades bring a traditional, decorative feel to a room and work beautifully in pairs.

Best for: wall lights, chandeliers and small decorative lamps
Frame: white candle clip frame
Fitting: clips directly onto a compatible candle-style bulb
Good to know: often sold as singles, pairs or sets depending on the fabric collection

Important fitting note:
Candle clip lampshades require a compatible candle-style bulb. The clip attaches to the bulb itself, so bulb shape and size are important.

Standard Drum Lampshades

Our standard drum lampshades are a timeless choice for table lamps, floor lamps and ceiling pendants. Their straight-sided shape gives a clean, balanced silhouette, making them easy to use in both classic and contemporary country interiors.

Each drum lampshade is made with our signature Vintage Gold utility frame, giving the fitting a warm, traditional finish that complements our fabrics beautifully.

Best for: table lamps, floor lamps and ceiling pendants
Frame: Vintage Gold utility frame
Available sizes: 20cm, 30cm and 40cm
Good to know: 20cm drums may be sold as sets of 2, while 30cm and 40cm drums are usually sold individually.

Our Drum Lampshade Sizes
For table and floor lamps, the shade should feel balanced with the lamp base. A shade that is too small can look top-heavy or mean, while a shade that is too large may overpower the base.

For ceiling pendants, consider the scale of the room as well as the fitting. A 30cm drum works well in smaller rooms and hallways, while a 40cm drum gives more presence in larger bedrooms, boot rooms, studies and living spaces.

20cm Drum Lampshade

Best for smaller table lamps, bedside lamps and compact spaces. This size is particularly useful where you want a neat shade that does not overwhelm a smaller base.

30cm Drum Lampshade

A versatile everyday size for table lamps, bedside lamps, smaller floor lamps and many room schemes. This is often the most useful size for medium lamp bases.

40cm Drum Lampshade

Best for larger table lamps, floor lamps and ceiling pendants. This size gives more presence and works well where you want the fabric or pattern to make more of a statement.

Measuring your lampshade helps you choose a replacement that fits your lamp base and feels balanced in proportion. If you already have a lampshade you like, use those measurements as your guide. Measure the diameter across the bottom of the shade, then measure the height from the bottom ring to the top ring. For our drum lampshades, the diameter is the width across the shade. For example, a 30cm drum lampshade measures approximately 30cm across the bottom ring.Small Step List1. Measure the diameterMeasure straight across the bottom of the shade.2. Pattern Placement

Some of our patterned fabrics may be cut differently depending on the lampshade shape.

Candle clip lampshades may be cut on the angle where this gives the best finish for the smaller shade.

Drum lampshades are usually cut on the straight of the pattern, creating a more structured appearance around the shade.

Please check the individual product listing for fabric-specific pattern and matching details.

Pair Matching & Multiple Shades
Bulb Guidance & Safe Use
Handmade To Order

Where matching shades are required, we recommend ordering them at the same time. This allows us to make them together using the same fabric batch wherever possible for the closest colour and pattern continuity.

As each lampshade is handmade to order, we cannot guarantee that a future order will exactly match a previous purchase.

For some fabrics, smaller formats such as candle clip lampshades or 20cm drum lampshades may be sold as sets of 2. This will be clearly shown on the product listing.

We recommend using LED bulbs with our lampshades, as they remain cooler in use and are more suitable for fabric shades.

Always ensure your bulb is compatible with your lamp or light fitting. The bulb should not touch the lampshade fabric or lining.

Please follow the safety guidance supplied with your lamp base, wall light, chandelier or pendant fitting.

Our lampshades are handmade to order using professional lampshade materials, with a rolled edge finish, smooth matt white lining and professional single seam construction.

Small variations in pattern placement, fabric position and finish may occur.

This is part of the character of a handmade fabric lampshade.

Choosing the Right Proportion

There is no single rule for choosing a lampshade, and the right choice often depends on your lamp base, room and personal style. As a simple guide, your lampshade should feel balanced with the lamp base rather than too small or too dominant.

A helpful starting point is to choose a shade diameter that is roughly twice the width of the lamp base. The shade should usually be slightly wider than the widest part of the base.

Quick Size Guide

Small lamp bases: 20cm or 30cm drum
Medium lamp bases: 30cm or 40cm drum
Larger lamp bases: 40cm drum or larger by request

Extra Note

For bedside tables, side tables and compact spaces, a 20cm or 30cm drum often works well. For larger table lamps, floor lamps and statement positions, a 40cm drum usually gives better balance and presence.

Fittings & Compatibility

How Fabric Affects the Light

Different fabrics change how much light passes through the lampshade and the atmosphere it creates in a room.

Lightweight fabrics: brighter, softer diffusion

Heavier fabrics: warmer, lower, more atmospheric glow

Patterned fabrics: decorative when unlit and characterful when lit

Lighter fabrics such as linen and fine cotton usually allow more light to pass through, creating a brighter and more diffused glow.

Heavier fabrics such as wool, velvet or thicker cotton reduce the amount of light transmitted, creating a softer, warmer and more atmospheric effect.

When choosing your lampshade fabric, consider whether you would like the shade to provide practical brightness or a gentler mood light.

Diffusers for Ceiling Lampshades

For ceiling pendant drum lampshades, a diffuser can be added to soften the view of the bulb and create a more even, finished glow from below. Our diffusers are made from translucent polypropylene, allowing light to pass through while gently reducing glare.

Diffusers are most useful for pendant shades where the underside of the lampshade is visible.

FAQs

How do I measure a lampshade?

Measure the diameter across the bottom of the shade, then measure the height from the bottom ring to the top ring.

Should I measure the top or bottom of a lampshade?

The bottom diameter is usually the most useful measurement when choosing a replacement shade.

What size lampshade do I need?

As a general guide, the shade diameter should be roughly twice the width of the lamp base, but the final choice depends on the lamp style and room setting.

Can I replace my lampshade with the same size?

Yes. If you already have a lampshade that works well, using the same diameter and height is usually the easiest way to choose a replacement.

What is a candle clip lampshade?

A candle clip lampshade has an internal clip frame that attaches directly onto a compatible candle-shaped bulb. It is commonly used for wall lights, chandeliers and small decorative lamps.

What is a Vintage Gold utility frame?

Our standard drum lampshades are made with a Vintage Gold utility frame, suitable for compatible table lamps, floor lamps and ceiling pendants.

Which bulbs should I use?

We recommend LED bulbs, as they remain cooler in use and are more suitable for fabric lampshades.
